The genus does not ocurr naturally in New Zealand or New Caledonia to the east. Eucalyptus is a large genus with about 600 species which can be grouped together into subgenera Blakella, Corymbia, Eudesmia, Gaubaea, Idiogenes, Monocalyptus and the large subgenus Symphyomyrtus.
